Scope of Project:

This project included the stabilization of the main channel dam abutment of the Emsworth Dam - located on the Ohio River downstream of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Work included the installation of 13 each - 5 1/2 inch micropiles, 15 each 7 inch micropiles, and 13 each 1 3/4 inch vertical dowel rods to stabilize the abutment wall. Micropile installation for this project required the use of air hammer and core drilling techniques. Drilling operations were accomplished from both land based, as well as marine based operations. Two shugart barges located landside and adjacent to the abutment wall were utilized to equally distribute the weight the drill rigs working from the top of the abutment wall. To satisfy tight schedule constraints, two drill rigs were used to accomplish marine based operations.
