Allegheny Lock No. 6

Location: Armsrong County, PA
Owner: USACE (Pittsburgh District)
General Contractor: Brayman Construction Corporation
Value: $2,900,000
Date Complete: In Progress

Scope of Project:

The project includes the emergency erosion repair of the dam identified during a periodic survey of the dam. The underwater inspection identified an area of erosion along an approximate 200 foot section of the dam that extended approximately 29 feet under the existing structure in an area of the dam directly adjacent to an existing hydroelectric facility. To date, repair work consisted of the placement of a sheet pile wall along the toe of the dam to seal off the void, and installing rock and engineered fill downstream of the piling for additional stabilization. The repair work also included tremie placement of approximately 800 cubic yards of concrete between the installed sheet pile wall and existing dam structure to fill the massive void of the eroded area. In addition, a series of 10 inch holes or portals were drilled through the existing concrete dam structure for additional placement of tremie concrete under the structure to ensure complete filling of the eroded areas. During repair operations, work was periodically halted due to high water fluctuations of the river. All critical dam repairs were substantially completed by mid-January 2009. The balance of work which consists of rip rap placement, derrick stone placement, as well as the placement of a high strength concrete cap between the top of the installed sheet pile wall and the apron of the dam will be accomplished once river conditions return to more manageable levels.
